The United States has said it will closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, warning that future security and financial support may depend on the conduct of the polls and the state of religious freedom.
US Congressman Riley Moore, a Republican representing West Virginia, disclosed this in an interview with NoireTV, stating that the elections have become a priority for Washington.
“We’re certainly going to be watching how these elections unfold and how they’re executed,” Moore said. “It’s something both I and the administration will be paying very close attention to.”
Moore also revealed that the US House of Representatives is considering an appropriations bill that includes strict provisions on Nigeria. According to him, the proposed legislation addresses concerns about religious persecution, particularly of Christians, and could impose restrictions on security assistance to Nigeria unless specific conditions are met.
“That bill is likely to become law,” he said. “It contains strong and binding language that will shape our relationship with Nigeria moving forward.”
The congressman added that he remains in active discussions with the Trump administration on Nigeria and plans to raise the issue during an upcoming meeting with former President Donald Trump.
Moore emphasized that the US government considers developments in Nigeria significant, particularly regarding democratic processes and human rights.
