Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the multilateral trading system.
Shettima said no country could prosper in isolation, stressing the importance of global cooperation and interconnectedness.
The Vice President spoke on Saturday during a meeting with WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India.
“We will continue to support the WTO in championing the cause of multilateralism. We are essentially one human family and interconnected. You cannot divorce yourself from the global community,” Shettima said.
He also described migration as an important driver of development, innovation and economic growth, citing the contributions of Nigerians and other immigrants around the world.
Shettima commended Okonjo-Iweala for her leadership of the WTO and urged her to continue using her experience to advance global development.
Nigeria’s participation in the BRICS summit is aimed at strengthening partnerships in trade, investment, technology and other sectors. Nigeria became a BRICS partner country in January 2025.
The 18th BRICS Summit, hosted by India, is being held under the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
