Borno South Senator Ali Ndume has urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure that funds for the recently approved military salary increase are transferred directly to the Armed Forces.
Ndume, a former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, said the salary review could boost the morale of military personnel and strengthen efforts to tackle insecurity.
Tinubu recently approved salary increases of between 30 and 80 per cent for Armed Forces personnel, effective September 1. The increase is expected to raise the military’s annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
In a statement on Tuesday, Ndume said the pay rise, alongside the recent expansion of the Army from eight to 12 divisions, showed the administration’s commitment to addressing terrorism and banditry.
He, however, stressed that improved salaries alone would not end the country’s security challenges.
Ndume called on the government to ensure the prompt provision of arms, ammunition, and other operational logistics needed by troops to effectively combat insurgency and banditry.
