Messi Retires From Argentina After 21 Years

Lionel Messi has promised to continue supporting Argentina’s national team after bringing his 21-year international career to an emotional end.

The 39-year-old Inter Miami forward made his final appearance for Argentina as they defeated Benin 3-0 in a friendly at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.

Messi scored from the penalty spot and provided two assists as Argentina secured a memorable victory in front of more than 85,000 fans. The match also marked his record 208th appearance and 126th international goal for the country.

Addressing the crowd after the match, Messi said he would miss playing for Argentina but would remain behind the team and its future players.

“I am going to miss all of you so much, but I will always be on your side. I will be supporting these boys and everyone who comes after them,” he said.

Messi leaves international football as Argentina’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer. He also led the country to the 2022 World Cup, Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, and the 2022 Finalissima.

His farewell was marked by emotional tributes, with fans, teammates and former Argentina players gathering to celebrate one of the country’s greatest footballers.
