The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has begun a nationwide enforcement operation targeting alcoholic drinks sold in sachets and small plastic bottles below 200ml, following the full implementation of the federal government’s ban.

The operation, ongoing across all six geopolitical zones, includes raids on markets, motor parks, bars, supermarkets, and other retail outlets. Enforcement teams have been directed to seize and destroy banned products and arrest offenders involved in their production or distribution.
The crackdown follows the shutdown of manufacturing facilities found violating the ban.
NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Christianah Adeyeye said all stakeholders, manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, and transporters must immediately surrender any remaining stock of the prohibited products or face sanctions and possible prosecution.
The agency said the move is part of a broader effort to curb underage drinking and reduce the widespread access to cheap alcohol among young Nigerians. It emphasized that the enforcement will be continuous and supported by public awareness campaigns.
NAFDAC clarified that compliant manufacturers are not affected, stressing that only sachet alcohol and sub-200ml PET bottled drinks are banned. The agency urged Nigerians to avoid such products and report violations to the nearest NAFDAC office.
