A man has explained why he confronted a trader at the Garki International Market in Abuja after allegedly hearing him make a sexual comment about a girl he believed was between seven and 10 years old.
The confrontation, which occurred last Saturday, was captured on video and later circulated on social media.
In a video explaining the incident, the man said he had visited the market after choir rehearsal to buy fabric for a client’s suit and help a friend collect clothes when he heard the alleged remark at the Obasanjo Block.
He said the girl was assisting her mother or guardian with a Point-of-Sale (POS) business and was carrying a blue Moniepoint terminal.
According to him, a woman nearby initially challenged the trader over the comment, but the man allegedly made another remark about the child, prompting him to intervene.
“Sir, with all due respect, this thing you just said is very stupid. You shouldn’t say that to a child because she’s a minor,” he recalled telling the trader.
He further alleged that some men at the scene defended the trader, while another person commented on the girl’s clothing.
The man said he was unaware that the confrontation was being recorded and only discovered later that the video had gone viral on TikTok.
Explaining his decision to intervene, he said, “The life of God in me trumps my humanity. I couldn’t hear that and walk away.”
