The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill says it will present the draft Executive Bill on state police to President Bola Tinubu on September 3, 2026.
Chairman of the group and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this on Monday after the committee’s inaugural meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said the bill is part of efforts to establish a legal framework for state policing, following recent progress on constitutional amendments to decentralize Nigeria’s police system.
According to Gbajabiamila, the committee has adopted a seven-week, milestone-driven work plan running from July 27 to September 14, 2026.
He explained that after the bill is presented to the President, it will undergo nationwide consultations before being transmitted to the National Assembly.
“The process will allow Nigerians to engage with the draft’s key provisions, including safeguards, funding structure, and transition plans,” he said.
The working group also called on stakeholders to submit memoranda, position papers, and practical proposals to enrich the draft.
President Tinubu had earlier inaugurated the committee to prepare an implementation-ready policing bill, following the National Assembly’s passage of a constitutional amendment enabling the creation of state police forces across the country.
The reform is seen as a major step toward addressing Nigeria’s growing security challenges through a decentralized policing system.
