Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has urged former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race.
Kwankwaso made the call on Monday while receiving members of the Fulani Farmers Association at his residence in Abuja.
The former Kano State governor cited Atiku’s age and health, urging his supporters to persuade him to step aside and focus on his traditional responsibilities as the Wazirin Adamawa.
“Go to the Wazirin of Adamawa’s house and tell him in Fulani that he needs to focus on his traditional title of Wazirin, given his age and health,” Kwankwaso said.
He added that he and NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi would take care of Atiku if they win the 2027 election.
The call comes amid efforts by opposition politicians to unite against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. Atiku, who is the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, said in April that the 2027 election would likely be his final attempt at the presidency.
Atiku, who will turn 80 in November 2026, has previously contested the presidency in 2007, 2019, and 2023.
