A retired senior officer of the Nigerian Army, Rabe Abubakar, has died while being held by armed bandits in Katsina State, with authorities confirming that his wife has since been released.

The Katsina State Government announced the development in an official statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Muazu, who disclosed that the former military spokesman passed away due to health complications during captivity.
According to the statement, the deceased suffered from underlying conditions, including diabetes and hypertension, which worsened while he was in the custody of his abductors.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the incident as a painful loss, extending condolences to the family and noting that the tragedy underscores the urgent need to intensify efforts against insecurity.
The retired general and his wife were abducted on May 30, 2026, along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area after gunmen ambushed their vehicle. Their driver was reportedly injured during the attack.
A video later surfaced showing the victims in captivity, with appeals made to authorities to meet the kidnappers’ demands, which reportedly included the release of detained individuals and the return of seized livestock.
Despite rescue efforts by security agencies, the situation ended tragically with the general’s death. His remains have reportedly been transported to Kaduna for burial, while his wife was released alive to government officials.
President Bola Tinubu expressed grief over the development, sympathising with the bereaved family and reaffirming the government’s resolve not to yield to the demands of criminal groups.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to pursuing those responsible and strengthening measures to curb banditry across the state.
