An officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has been killed during an enforcement operation against illegal mining in Niger State.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, in Korokpa Village, when NSCDC Mining Marshals were attacked by suspected illegal miners who resisted arrest, according to a statement by the corps’ spokesperson, Abubakar Muti.
The officers reportedly called for backup during the confrontation, but one operative was shot in the head amid the clash. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
State Commandant Suberu Aniviye condemned the killing, describing the officer as “patriotic and courageous.” He said efforts are ongoing, in collaboration with other security agencies, to apprehend those responsible.
Authorities have urged residents to provide information that could help tackle illegal mining activities in the state.
