Hot Drops: National Power Grid Collapses Again in Five Days

Nigeria’s national power grid collapsed again on Tuesday, marking the second time in just five days that the system has failed.

Reports show that electricity generation dropped sharply around 11 a.m., falling from about 3,825 megawatts at 10 a.m. to just about 35 megawatts. Earlier in the day, power generation had reached a high of 4,762 megawatts at around 6 a.m.

This latest incident is the second grid collapse in January 2026 and the third in less than one month. The grid had previously collapsed on December 29, 2025, and again on Friday, January 23, 2026.

When the grid went down on Tuesday, power supply to all electricity distribution companies dropped to zero, meaning no part of the country was receiving power at the time.
