Four years after BBNaija win, Phyna makes boxing history

Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Phyna, has marked the fourth anniversary of her reality TV victory after making history in the boxing ring.

Phyna, whose real name is Josephina Otabor, defeated Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing by knockout in their four-round celebrity boxing bout at Balmoral Promotions’ Chaos in the Ring event in Lagos on Thursday.

The fight, held at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, was the first female celebrity boxing bout in the Chaos in the Ring series. Phyna stopped Nkechi in the fourth round to claim victory and a ₦50 million prize.

The victory came exactly four years after Phyna won the seventh season of Big Brother Naija, tagged Level Up, on October 2, 2022.

Reflecting on both milestones, Phyna described October 2 as a special date in her life.

“Today marks the anniversary of the day I won BBN, and now, years later, I’m celebrating another historic victory,” she wrote in a post.

She said her move from reality television into boxing reflected her determination to challenge herself and break barriers.

Following her victory, Phyna said she was interested in pursuing professional boxing and called out actress Etinosa Idemudia as a potential next opponent. Etinosa, who watched the bout from ringside, accepted the challenge.

The event also featured a celebrity bout between Carter Efe and Speed Darlington, with Carter Efe winning by technical knockout. In the professional main event, Ghana’s Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah defeated Nigeria’s Godday “Zodsolo” Appah by unanimous decision to claim the WBO African Light Heavyweight Continental Championship.
