President Bola Tinubu’s administration has approved a monthly transport allowance of N70,000 for public service workers for six months, beginning in November 2026, following talks with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The agreement was reached on Tuesday, October 27, during a conciliation meeting between the Federal Government and the NLC, led by its president, Joe Ajaero, amid labour’s demands for lower petrol prices and a review of the national minimum wage.
The government also approved the payment of outstanding peculiar allowance arrears, effective from May 1, 2026, in three equal monthly instalments beginning in November.
However, both parties failed to agree on when a new national minimum wage should take effect. They agreed to establish a negotiation committee to begin discussions immediately.
The meeting also addressed outstanding allowances owed to health workers, with the government agreeing to clear 19 months of arrears within three months from December 2026.
The NLC had threatened further action over rising petrol prices, workers’ welfare and the need to renegotiate the N70,000 minimum wage. The latest agreement provides for continued negotiations, with both parties expected to review implementation after one month.
