Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has addressed the silence of some former colleagues, friends, and associates amid his ongoing legal and political challenges.
In a statement titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath” and dated September 23, 2026, El-Rufai said he had supported people and causes over the years based on his Islamic faith, Arewa upbringing, personal values, and conscience.
He said his support was never motivated by expectations of praise, gratitude, or reciprocity, but by his belief that he was doing the right thing.
El-Rufai acknowledged that some people who were once close to him may now choose to speak, remain silent, deny their relationships, or “try rewriting history.”
He said difficult circumstances had given him an opportunity to reconsider some relationships, adding that such reflection was not intended as condemnation.
“I have no regrets about standing by people or for causes when I believed it was right to do so, and I bear no resentment towards anyone who chooses not to do the same for me,” he said.
The former governor also said he would not seek revenge over any perceived injustice or ingratitude, leaving what he described as “ultimate accountability” to God.
His comments come as he faces ongoing legal proceedings. On September 22, the Federal High Court in Abuja reserved October 26 for ruling on his no-case submission in a five-count case filed by the Department of State Services over alleged unlawful interception of telephone communications. El-Rufai has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
He is also pursuing a separate fundamental-rights case over the search of his Abuja residence.
