The Department of State Services (DSS) has warned of intelligence indicating plans by terrorists and bandit groups to attack tertiary institutions across Sokoto State.

The warning was contained in a July 18, 2026, letter to the Sokoto State Government, signed on behalf of the State Director of Security, B. Abdulaziz.
In the alert titled “Planned Attack on Tertiary Institutions by Terrorist and Bandit Gangs,” the DSS said criminal groups were shifting their focus from primary and secondary schools to universities and other higher institutions.
The Service said the institutions could be targeted because of the large number of students, staff, and their families, making them potential targets for abduction.
It warned that any attack could disrupt academic activities and create fear among students and workers.
The DSS urged the state government to immediately review and strengthen security measures around tertiary institutions. It also said relevant security agencies had been alerted to the threat and directed to take preventive measures.
The warning comes amid continued security concerns in Sokoto, where authorities have recently intensified operations against banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
The state government was advised to coordinate with security agencies to protect students, staff, and educational facilities across the state.
