Aziz Abdul, the grandson of former Ugandan leader Idi Amin, was disqualified from the Commonwealth boxing tournament after a headbutt in his super-heavyweight quarter-final bout on Wednesday.
Abdul’s campaign ended abruptly during a heated contest against England’s Damar Thomas in Glasgow. Despite a strong start that saw him land several left hooks in the opening round, the Ugandan boxer struggled to maintain control as the fight progressed.
Thomas gained the upper hand, earning Abdul a standing count with a sharp counter. Abdul was later penalized for repeated fouls, including punching during breaks, which led to point deductions.
The bout reached a turning point in the final round when Abdul headbutted Thomas, prompting the referee to issue a third and decisive warning, resulting in immediate disqualification. The incident drew loud boos from the crowd.
Speaking after the fight, Abdul criticized the decision, calling it unfair and accusing his opponent of similar infractions.
“I am not happy with the referee’s decision. It’s unfair,” he said.
Abdul had earlier drawn attention for declaring his ambition to become the “new king of Scotland,” echoing a title famously claimed by his grandfather in 1976.
