Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has praised goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for his crucial save in Nigeria’s 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
Madagascar took an early lead in Uyo before George Ilenikhena equalized in first-half stoppage time on his senior international debut. Moses Usor then completed Nigeria’s comeback in the 65th minute.
Chelle singled out Nwabali for keeping Nigeria in the game when Madagascar threatened to regain the lead shortly after the restart.
“Nwabali did well because they had a chance to score a goal, but Nwabali at this moment practically was very good,” Chelle said after the match.
The coach also admitted that Nigeria were not at their best but praised the team’s response after falling behind. He said the Super Eagles had to adjust their formation to deal with Madagascar’s deep defensive setup.
Nigeria will next face Guinea-Bissau away on Tuesday, September 29, in their second Group L qualifier.
