A federal lawmaker has raised serious concerns over the poor implementation of Nigeria’s capital budget, describing the situation as a potential impeachable offence.
Mohammed Tahir Monguno, who represents Borno North Senatorial District, made the remarks on Monday during a Senate Committee on Finance session focused on the state of the economy. The meeting featured responses from the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, to lawmakers’ questions.
Monguno questioned the government’s handling of budgetary allocations, noting that a significant portion of the 2025 budget remains unimplemented. According to him, about 70 percent of the budget has been rolled over into 2026, despite assurances that at least 30 percent would be executed by March, an expectation he said was not met.
He further revealed that the National Assembly had extended the lifespan of the 2025 budget to September to allow partial implementation, raising concerns about accountability and fiscal management.
The lawmaker also expressed alarm over reports from security agencies, which he said have received no capital allocations, despite ongoing security challenges across the country.
“Where are these funds going?” Monguno asked, warning that failure to implement the budget undermines governance and could constitute a breach of the law.
He emphasized that ensuring security and effective public spending are fundamental responsibilities of government, adding that continued lapses could have serious constitutional implications.
