Atiku Wins Big in ADC Primary, Appeals for Party Unity

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has secured the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election.

The outcome was announced on Wednesday evening at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, where party officials confirmed that Atiku defeated former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

Following the declaration, the party leadership, led by Senator David Mark, formally presented the ADC flag to Atiku as its standard-bearer.

Official figures showed Atiku polling 1,846,370 votes, while Amaechi secured 504,117 votes and Hayatu-Deen received 177,120 votes, out of a total of 2,546,457 ballots cast.

The primary, conducted through a direct voting system across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, followed the decision by all three aspirants to reject a consensus arrangement.

In his acceptance remarks, Atiku urged aggrieved members and co-contestants to set aside differences and work collectively in the interest of the party.

He specifically appealed to Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen to join efforts aimed at strengthening the party and advancing what he described as a broader national objective.

The former vice president emphasised that internal competition should not divide the party, noting that unity would be essential ahead of the general election.

He also outlined key policy priorities, including improvements in security, education, healthcare, and economic management, while pledging to collaborate with party stakeholders in building a stronger platform.

However, both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen rejected the outcome of the exercise, alleging irregularities in the voting process.
