ASUU Shuts Down Ondo Medical University Over Unpaid Arrears

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED), has declared a total and indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and payment of salary arrears dating back to January 2026.

The union announced the strike on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after its 14-day ultimatum to the university management and Ondo State Government expired without its demands being met.

In a statement signed by the branch Chairman, Abraham Oladebeye, and Secretary, Adeniran Akinola, ASUU-UNIMED directed members to withdraw from all academic duties with immediate effect.

The action affects lectures, continuous assessments, examinations, seminars, research supervision, industrial training, and fieldwork. Departmental, faculty, committee, and Senate meetings, whether physical or virtual, are also suspended.

The union said the strike would continue until the 2025 agreement is fully implemented and all outstanding arrears from January 2026 are paid.

The development follows months of disagreement between ASUU and the Ondo State Government over the implementation of the agreement. In June, ASUU’s Akure Zone accused the state government of failing to implement the agreement’s financial provisions, including academic and research allowances.

Although Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa announced on August 20 that the state had approved implementation of the agreement from August, ASUU-UNIMED said its demands remained unresolved.

UNIMED becomes the latest Ondo State-owned university affected by the dispute, joining Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, where ASUU has also taken industrial action over the agreement and outstanding payments.

As of the latest reports, UNIMED management had not issued an official response to the strike.
