The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has urged United States authorities to release records linked to President Bola Tinubu that are being sought under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
The party said efforts to prevent the release of the records, which relate to allegations of drug trafficking, could fuel public suspicion.
In a statement on Sunday, APM National Publicity Secretary Yusuf Abubakar said sensitive information could be redacted while portions that do not endanger witnesses, investigators, or law enforcement methods are made public.
The call comes amid a legal battle in a US federal court over the release of records held by the FBI, Department of Justice and Drug Enforcement Administration.
Tinubu’s legal team recently filed an application opposing the release of the records, arguing that disclosure could infringe on his privacy rights. The documents are being sought by US transparency activist Aaron Greenspan through a FOIA lawsuit.
APM said greater transparency was necessary, arguing that continued withholding of the information could harm Nigeria’s democratic integrity and international reputation.
The FBI has also sought permission to submit some of the disputed records privately to the judge, citing concerns about exposing law enforcement methods and potentially putting individuals at risk.
