Aisha Achimugu’s N10bn Suit Against EFCC Dismissed

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a N10 billion fundamental rights suit filed by businesswoman Aisha Achimugu against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the search of her residence and seizure of her belongings.

Justice M.S. Liman dismissed the suit, holding that the EFCC had the power to search Achimugu’s residence after receiving intelligence concerning alleged criminal activities, according to a statement issued by the commission on Monday.

Achimugu had challenged the search of her home and seizure of her vehicles, jewelry, and other items, arguing that the actions violated her right to privacy. She sought N10 billion in damages and an order restraining the commission from allegedly harassing or invading her residence.

However, the judge ruled that Achimugu and her legal team had failed to establish sufficient grounds for the damages sought. The court also described the suit as lacking merit and having been brought in bad faith, according to the EFCC.

Reacting to the judgment, EFCC counsel Emenike Mgbemele welcomed the decision, saying it was in the interest of justice.
