ADC to Shettima: APC can’t run from Buhari’s record

The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADCPCC) has criticized Vice President Kashim Shettima’s claim that President Bola Tinubu saved Nigeria from economic collapse.

Shettima had said Nigeria was “on the road to Caracas” before Tinubu took office in 2023, arguing that the President’s economic reforms prevented the country from sliding into deeper crisis. He cited the removal of the petrol subsidy and exchange-rate reforms among the measures taken to stabilize the economy.

But in a statement on Sunday, ADC campaign spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan said the claim also amounted to an indictment of the APC government under former President Muhammadu Buhari, which governed Nigeria for eight years before Tinubu’s administration.

Ologbondiyan said the APC could not distance itself from Buhari’s record while defending Tinubu, noting that Tinubu had previously supported the former administration.

“If Nigeria was heading to Caracas under Buhari, it means Buhari and the APC deceived Nigerians for eight years,” he said.

The ADC spokesman also rejected Shettima’s claim that Tinubu had saved Nigeria from economic collapse, arguing that Nigerians were still facing high living costs, unemployment, insecurity, and other economic difficulties.

He said the government should focus on delivering results rather than making new promises, while questioning its plan to deploy 10,600 electric tricycles, 300 buses, and electric taxis under an e-logistics program in the North-East. The Federal Government says the initiative is intended to ease transportation difficulties.

Ologbondiyan urged Nigerians to judge the APC administration by its performance, saying the ADC would offer an alternative ahead of the 2027 elections.

The ADC campaign council also accused the ruling party of attempting to rewrite its political record and called on the government to address the economic challenges confronting Nigerians.
