UN Backs Nigeria’s Efforts to Contain Ebola Case

The United Nations has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to contain its first confirmed case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease, pledging support to prevent further spread.

UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, gave the assurance on Wednesday, commending Nigerian health authorities for their swift response and contact-tracing efforts.

Dujarric urged countries to cooperate with the World Health Organization (WHO) and comply with international health regulations to control the outbreak. He also reaffirmed the UN’s readiness to assist Nigeria.

Nigeria confirmed the imported case on Tuesday, October 20, involving a woman who had recently traveled from Uganda. According to the WHO, her symptoms began on October 7, and she sought medical attention in Abuja on October 11 before testing positive on October 20.

The patient is receiving treatment in isolation, while 44 contacts have been identified for monitoring. The WHO and its partners are supporting Nigeria with contact tracing, infection prevention and control measures, investigations, and essential medical supplies.
