Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has revealed that songwriting helps her process emotional pain, heal and move on from difficult experiences.

The Grammy-winning singer made this known in an interview with EE72 Magazine, published on October 12, 2026, where she described music as more than a passion.
According to Tems, putting her emotions into songs leaves her feeling whole and makes it easier to forgive and let go of painful experiences.
“Writing music helps me release pain and it helps me to heal. By the time I am done, everything I felt, it is gone. I can let the whole situation go. I can forgive. I can move on,” she said.
The singer also said she no longer feels the need to prove herself to others, stressing that she understands what aligns with her identity and artistic vision.
“I am not trying to prove who I am. I know what is for me and what is not for me,” she said, adding that she wants to embrace every experience and make the most of each moment.
