Onanuga Defends Tinubu’s Economy, Cites Falling Food Prices

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has defended the President’s economic policies, arguing that the support of 33 state governors reflects confidence in his leadership.

Onanuga made the remarks in a post on X on Friday while criticising television presenters for questioning the administration’s economic progress since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

He cited falling food prices, improved foreign exchange access, rising external reserves and renewed foreign investment as signs of progress under the administration.

Onanuga claimed that a bag of rice, which previously sold for about N120,000, now costs below N50,000 in some areas, with prices reaching N45,000 in his hometown.

He also said Nigeria’s foreign reserves were approaching $60 billion. However, the Central Bank of Nigeria later corrected its published figures, with reserves standing at about $55.07 billion on October 9.

The presidential aide further argued that foreign direct investment was returning and businesses had improved access to foreign exchange for importing raw materials and equipment.

He maintained that the governors’ backing showed confidence in Tinubu’s economic direction and urged critics to assess the administration’s performance beyond partisan considerations.
