Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, has urged Nigerians to make informed choices when voting in the 2027 presidential election.

Agbakoba said the country’s persistent challenges, including rising food prices, poor healthcare, a struggling education system and limited job opportunities, should make voters pay closer attention to the quality of candidates seeking their votes.
The senior lawyer made the call in a post on X while discussing the 2027 general elections.
He said Nigerians should not underestimate the power of their votes, noting that citizens have the ability to determine who leads the country through the ballot box.
Agbakoba urged voters to assess candidates based on their character, leadership ability and capacity to deliver meaningful change rather than their ethnic or other backgrounds.
“As we approach this critical time, we need to choose our leaders carefully. In the past, our choices have not always served us well, and the consequences are evident in our daily lives,” he said.
He pointed to food insecurity, inadequate healthcare, weak education and a shortage of jobs, particularly for young Nigerians, as major issues that should influence voting decisions.
“It doesn’t matter where candidates come from or what they look like; what matters is their ability to lead with discipline, inspire change, and make a meaningful impact,” he added.
Agbakoba has previously called for issue-based politics and electoral reforms ahead of 2027, including stronger legal backing for electronic transmission of election results. He has also advocated greater devolution of powers and constitutional reforms as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s structural challenges.
He urged Nigerians to use their votes deliberately and elect leaders capable of addressing the country’s pressing challenges.
