Bauchi to provide free ultrasound scans for 300,000 women

The Bauchi State Government has deployed 20 4D ultrasound machines to general hospitals across the state to provide free ultrasound scans for women.

The state also commissioned 73 anti-shock garments to help manage severe bleeding caused by postpartum haemorrhage.

Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau disclosed this on Tuesday at the 2025 Annual Recognition and Award Ceremony and the Quarter Two 2026 State Task Force on Primary Health Care meeting in Bauchi.

Jatau said the 20 ultrasound machines, valued at N750 million, would improve prenatal diagnosis and access to quality maternal healthcare across the state.

The machines, procured with support from a World Bank-backed project, will be distributed to the state’s 20 general hospitals.

Project Manager of the World Bank-supported project, Dr Adamu Muhammad, said about N595 million was spent on the machines, which can be used for obstetric, transvaginal, transabdominal, echocardiography and Doppler examinations.

He said the intervention was expected to provide free ultrasound services to about 300,000 women within the next three months.

Muhammad also said 73 anti-shock garments, costing about N25 million, would be distributed to high-volume primary healthcare centres.

He explained that the reusable garments would temporarily control severe bleeding in women suffering postpartum haemorrhage while they are being referred to higher-level facilities for treatment.

Jatau added that the state was providing free antenatal care and delivery kits across its 212 primary healthcare centres through the IMPACT Project.

He also said 1,678 skilled birth attendants had been absorbed into the permanent civil service to address manpower shortages in healthcare facilities.
