EFCC boss warns: Only 60% of stolen funds can be recovered

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has said the agency can recover only about 60 percent of funds after they have been stolen.

Olukoyede made the disclosure on Friday during the inauguration of the EFCC’s Zonal Directorate in Awka, Anambra State.

He said preventing corruption and financial crimes was more effective than trying to recover funds after they had been diverted.

“I have discovered that when money has been stolen, the best you can recover is 60 percent,” he said.

The EFCC chairman urged Nigerians, community leaders, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to report suspected financial crimes to the commission.

He said citizens should also speak up when public funds meant for community projects were allegedly diverted or projects were left uncompleted.

Olukoyede said the establishment of the Awka office was part of the EFCC’s expansion strategy to bring its operations closer to economic centers and help protect economic activities in Anambra and neighboring states.
