The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspect linked to an alleged threat to kidnap and kill a 50-year-old resident of Seni Salla Village, Saki, and his family.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.
According to the police, the victim, Metu Jilani, reported on September 19 that he had received threatening calls from unknown persons on September 13.
The callers allegedly claimed they had been hired to kidnap and kill him and his family and demanded ₦3 million, directing him to transfer the money to a Point-of-Sale operator’s account in Kwara State.
Rather than pay the full amount, Jilani transferred ₦100,000, which police said provided an investigative lead.
The command said two men, identified as Hantsi Abdullahi and Hantsi Liman, later went to the POS operator to withdraw the money on September 18.
Abdullahi was arrested while attempting to collect the funds, while Liman escaped.
Police said Abdullahi was subsequently attacked by a mob before officers intervened and took him to hospital, where he remains on admission.
The command said efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect and identify others who may be connected to the alleged threat.
The Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, ordered a thorough investigation and urged residents to promptly report threats and suspicious activities to the police.
