Health Officials Move Fast on Suspected Mpox in Benue

The Benue State Government has launched an investigation into a suspected case of Mpox in Konshisha Local Government Area.

Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Ogwuche, said authorities activated the state’s disease surveillance system and deployed health officials to Korinya following reports of a suspected case at a residence in the area.

According to a statement issued in Makurdi, officials have begun on-site assessment, case investigation, and collection of clinical samples for laboratory testing.

Ogwuche cautioned residents against panic, noting that symptoms such as fever and skin rashes may be caused by various illnesses and require laboratory confirmation before any diagnosis of Mpox can be made.

He added that no outbreak has been confirmed in the state and assured that surveillance remains active across all 23 local government areas.

The commissioner said the ministry is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the Federal Ministry of Health, and the World Health Organization to ensure a prompt response.

Residents with symptoms including fever and unexplained rashes or blisters are advised to seek immediate medical attention and avoid close contact with others until assessed.

The government said it will provide updates once laboratory results are available and will implement necessary measures in line with national health guidelines if the case is confirmed.
