Donald Trump has pledged support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu in tackling terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, describing it as “an honor” to stand with his administration.
In a letter dated July 6, 2026, Trump commended Tinubu’s leadership and efforts to address violence, particularly attacks affecting Christian communities.
He said the United States remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s security and prosperity, noting that both countries share a common goal of combating terrorism.
“The United States–Nigeria relationship is crucial at this time,” Trump wrote, adding that a 2026 defence cooperation roadmap has created a framework for joint action, including military training, intelligence sharing, and operational support.
As part of the collaboration, US Special Operations Forces have been deployed to support the Nigerian Armed Forces with training and intelligence.
Security cooperation between both countries has intensified in recent months. A joint working group established in 2025 has coordinated efforts to counter extremist groups, including a May 16 operation in the Lake Chad region targeting Islamic State fighters, which reportedly killed senior leader Abubakar Al-Minoki.
Meanwhile, US engagement with Nigeria continues at the diplomatic level. During a recent visit to Abuja, a senior US official reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to deeper cooperation on security and regional stability.
