The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 1.63 million tramadol pills and arrested suspected members of a transnational drug trafficking syndicate operating along the Togo–Benin–Nigeria corridor.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi said the seizures followed intelligence-led operations that tracked two trailers concealing tramadol in hidden compartments. One truck was intercepted on July 2 along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where 853,000 pills were recovered and a 22-year-old driver arrested. A second trailer stopped on July 4 yielded 777,000 pills, with another driver apprehended.
Babafemi noted the operation came shortly after an earlier seizure of 558,900 tramadol pills on the same route, linking all consignments to the same trafficking network.
At Lagos’ international airport, NDLEA officers also intercepted 4.7kg of “Canadian Loud,” a synthetic cannabis strain, smuggled from Canada in labeled cartons. Three suspects were arrested in connection with the shipment, including the alleged owner.
Elsewhere, arrests were made in Rivers, Edo, and Kogi states, including an 80-year-old suspect found with illicit drugs and a couple linked to a warehouse containing large quantities of cannabis.
NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa commended officers for the successful operations, urging continued vigilance in the agency’s fight against drug trafficking.
