No ‘Private Armies’: Reps Defend State Police Proposal

The House of Representatives has assured Nigerians that proposed state police structures will not become tools for political control by governors.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas gave the assurance on Wednesday during the National Security Roundtable at the 2026 National Assembly Open Week in Abuja.

Abbas said the proposed reform is aimed at strengthening community policing while maintaining federal oversight to safeguard democracy and the rule of law.

He added that the State Police Bill, described as one of the most significant constitutional reforms before the National Assembly, will undergo thorough legislative scrutiny to prevent abuse.

According to the Speaker, the initiative marks a historic shift, noting that it is the first time a sitting president has formally submitted a bill to establish state police.

“State police will not be private armies for governors,” Abbas said, emphasizing that the reform is intended to improve security while preserving accountability.
