Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has indicated that he is unlikely to contest for Nigeria’s presidency in 2031.
Speaking during an interview with media personality Rufai Oseni, Obi said his decision would largely depend on Nigeria’s informal zoning arrangement, which rotates power between the North and South.
He explained that if the presidency shifts to the North in 2031, it would likely return to the South years later, by which time he would be about 78 years old.
“I don’t think I would be doing this at that age,” Obi said, noting that the chances of him running again are “very slim.”
The former governor of Anambra State added that a 2031 bid could only be reconsidered if power remains in the South after the 2027 election, though he stressed that the likelihood remains low.
