The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended Nigeria’s ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks, shifting the deadline from July 10 to July 24, 2026.
The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna. He said the decision followed a review of the exercise and feedback from state offices, political parties, civil society groups, and other stakeholders.
The CVR, which began on August 18, 2025, was extended to give more eligible Nigerians the opportunity to register ahead of future elections. INEC said the move reflects its commitment to ensuring inclusive participation in the electoral process.
In a new development, the Commission also unveiled a self-service online voter registration option for first-time registrants. The service will go live on July 8, 2026, via the CVR portal.
According to INEC, the platform will allow users to complete the registration process, including biometric capture, using personal devices without visiting registration centres. The system includes identity verification and data validation measures to maintain the integrity of the voter register.
INEC urged eligible citizens yet to register to take advantage of the extended deadline and the new digital option.
