AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Beat Algeria 2–0 to Reach Semi-Finals

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have qualified for the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a comfortable 2–0 victory over Algeria at the Stade de Marrakech.

The win sets up a semi-final clash against host nation Morocco, who defeated Cameroon in their quarter-final match.

Nigeria came into the game full of confidence after thrashing Mozambique 4–0 in the round of 16. With 12 goals scored in four matches, the Super Eagles have been the highest-scoring team at the tournament.

Algeria, on the other hand, had not lost a game before this match and had conceded just one goal in the tournament, making them known for their solid defence.

From the opening minutes, Nigeria dominated the game, keeping possession and pressing Algeria high up the pitch. Victor Osimhen led the attack, supported by Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams, while Alex Iwobi controlled the midfield and helped connect defence to attack.

Nigeria created several chances in the first half. Akor Adams missed a clear one-on-one opportunity, and another of his shots was cleared off the goal line. Algeria stayed organised at the back and tried to hit Nigeria on the counterattack, with goalkeeper Luca Zidane making key saves to keep them in the game.

The breakthrough came in the second half when Victor Osimhen scored with a powerful header to give Nigeria the lead.

The Super Eagles continued to press forward, and Akor Adams scored Nigeria’s second goal after receiving an assist from Osimhen.

Nigeria remained in control for the rest of the match, with Wilfred Ndidi breaking up Algerian attacks and the defence staying solid. Despite Algeria making changes to try to fight back, Nigeria held firm until the final whistle.

With the win, the Super Eagles move into the semi-finals, where they will face Morocco.
