The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of worsening Nigeria’s food crisis, following a report that over 17 million citizens are facing acute hunger.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described the situation as a “growing humanitarian disaster” caused by government policies and insecurity.
The reaction follows findings by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), which revealed that millions of Nigerians across nine conflict-affected northern states are experiencing crisis to catastrophic levels of food insecurity. The report also noted a sharp rise in hunger figures, with Borno State alone accounting for over three million affected persons, while the combined total for Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe stands at 6.2 million.
The ADC criticized the federal government for what it termed “cruel indifference” to the crisis, blaming persistent insecurity, including banditry and terrorism, for displacing farming communities and disrupting food production.
The party also linked worsening hunger to rising food prices and economic policies that have made basic necessities unaffordable for many Nigerians.
“These are not political claims but findings from a global humanitarian authority,” Abdullahi said, adding that the crisis reflects a failure to secure lives, support farmers, and manage the cost of living.
The WFP report highlights one of Nigeria’s most severe food security challenges in nearly a decade, with humanitarian concerns expected to deepen if urgent interventions are not implemented.
